The Rhythm of Freedom
2016, April 29th, Mushroom Mountain in Yunnan
I kept pounding on my chest and at the same time roaring the word “freedom” in the natural environment of the Mount Mushroom in Shizong, Yunnan. As my pounding intensified, plus the influence of plateau, I soon felt weary and found it more and more difficult to say that word. So much so that it had become extremely difficult even just for me to breathe. By the time I could not utter this word, I finished my performance art.
I acted in a picturesque environment, articulating a word that connotes the great force of liberation with a demonstrative gorilla-like body language. Seemingly unrelated, the natural sceneries and human behaviors somehow manifested the mixed relationships of hope and despair, excitement and exhaustion, nature and politics.
For artists, one of their roles is to stir within themselves time and again such a passion for a fight in their limited hours on earth.
The reason I chose the English word was that the English word “freedom” is consisted of “free” (liberty) and “dom” (a state or domain) that fittingly constituted both sides of my work.
